Ups and Downs of Publishing.

As most of you know I published a middle grade novel with Pugalicious Press last November. I barely got to marketing. I have a companion novella written and edited, ready to self publish.

It’s called How To Survive Pirate Curses and Tainted Treasure. I hadn’t written these characters in a couple years, so I loved returning to them. Especially as a writer with more experience. I had a blast.

Sadly, Pugalicious Press recently closed with my novel barely even out.

I’m not as disappointed as I thought I’d be. Self-publishing definitely has taught me that in this industry, as with life, stuff happens. We can’t control what works, what doesn’t work, what sells and what doesn’t sell.

So I shouldered this news with a shrug. From what I can tell this kind of thing happens all the time in the traditional industry. Books are orphaned, never picked up, or go out of print.

The good thing is that I know I can re-release them in the future. But I’m going to wait. There’s too much on my plate right now, but I loved these stories, so I see it happening at some point.

As with any news: good or bad, it’s important to MOVE FORWARD, even changing course at times if needed.

Do you have good news? In what ways have you had to adapt to the industry?

An epic fairy tale adventure!!

Anna Staniszewski truly out did herself with the sequel, My Epic Fairy Tale Fail.

Click the picture to purchase!

Anna’s quirky sense of humor shines through the whole story. I found myself smiling, laughing, but at the same time caring about Jenny. Especially since in this sequel, Jenny’s task is to go to the land where her parents disappeared seven years ago. The stakes are high as Jenny accepts this task with the high hopes of finding clues about her parents.

Anthony, the gnome, whisks her off to Fairy Tale Land. She arrives to find the magic has disappeared and the inhabitants blame Jenny’s parents. She must face three impossible tasks, set up by the evil witch (really a granny in duck sweaters). I love how Anna uses a stereotype and completely turns it around with her unique style.

Of course, my favorite character is the knight. The one stuck in his armor permanently. Very funny.

But don’t let the humor disguise you. Jenny struggles with disappointment after disappointment on her quest to find her parents. She also shares this adventure with her best friends, which presents its own set of issues.

I could rave on and on, but the highest compliment comes from the readers who are children. I gave the first book to my niece, when it released. This past summer I learned that she rereads the book a lot! Now that’s what every author wants to hear.

Definitely buy this book for a girl in your life who wants to laugh, love and live inside the pages of a great book!

Jersey Boys and Jump Boys

Every time I attend a theater performance, I walk away with lessons to apply to my life and chasing dreams.

Jersey Boys is the story behind Frank Valli and the Four Seasons. The musical was extremely well done. At the start, the performance showed the band struggling to find gigs, barely making it. They were young with stars in their eyes. Did you know they were originally called the Four Lovers?

Yeah, not very good.

They made it big when they got a slot on American Bandstand and over night they sold over 100 thousand records. From then, it was hit after hit. Sherry. Big Girls Don’t Cry. Every hit song had a story behind hit. Something that sparked the idea, usually something personal in their lives.

Even back then it was about visibility. They had the same talent. Same singers. But they needed a platform for the world to discover them. Bandstand offered them that. They worked hard, they persevered until they got their break.

Whatever dreams your chasing. Keep working hard. Don’t give up.

And here’s a brand new middle grade by author Alex Banks.

Jump Boys: SOS

by Alex Banks

MG Science Fiction

A dare gone terribly wrong.

An SOS from another universe.

A threat from right next door.

Thirteen-year-old twin brothers Jayce and Val are about to jump the multi-verses on a dangerous dare, but true danger is closer to home than they realize.
The Jupiter Prime colony has been orbiting the stormy gas giant for nineteen years and all anyone wants is to get back to Earth. Sent to preserve the best and brightest of the population, a grievous error in the Prime’s navigation coordinates sent the colony to an alternate dimension with no way to return to the Earth they call home.

In a society where technical expertise is valued above all else, Jayce and Val are among the most privileged—until they uncover their uncle’s plot to claim dominion over space and time. While attempting to rescue a lone girl from a post-apocalyptic earth, Val will come face to face with space pirates and Jayce will lay his life on the line for the sake of his brother and the little girl who holds the key to time itself.

Alex Banks doesn’t live on Planet Earth.Alex lives on the Prime Colony Ship orbiting Jupiter or on a pirate ship off the Nova Scotia coast,or on a world called Insulunda where the land masses shift and move like clouds.Wherever there are dreams to be charted like stars in the sky or fun to be had just down that street . . . that’s where you’ll find Alex Banks.
